Jacksonville AR Community Bio:

The city of Jacksonville, AR was named after Nicholas Jackson. He was a landowner that held the deed to the land for the railroad that lead to the Cairo & Fulton Railroad in 1870. The community evolved from the settlement surrounding the railroad depot, eventually incorporating in 1941. Shortly after, construction began on the Arkansas Ordnance Plant (AOP), which served as the primary facility for the development of fuses and detonators for World War II.

Today, portions of AOP still remain, including the Arkansas Ordnance Plant Guard House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Jacksonville Museum of Military History. The Jacksonville Community Center was officially opened in April, 1995. The Center is an award winning facility that is operated by the Parks and Recreation Department. The facility was awarded the Arkansas Recreation & Parks Association 1995 Facility of the Year, a 1995 Community Development Awards Program winner, and received the 2000 Governor's Leadership in Fitness Award.
